HARIKO

Rikuo Takata

This work began with a question: could the traditional Japanese hariko technique, where layers of washi paper are applied over a clay or similar mold to form papier-mâché objects, be expanded to the scale of furniture? Using FRP as the structural core, the texture of Echizen washi interacts with the elasticity and translucency of the resin, creating forms and surfaces reminiscent of naturally layered rock.As both materials transmit light, the illumination embedded within softly seeps through, giving the piece a quiet, mineral-like glow.By layering Echizen washi on top as a finishing treatment, the natural unevenness and fiber texture remain visible, transforming the labor-intensive FRP surface finishing into a refined expression through the harmonious fusion of two fibrous materials. The work explores a new presence that emerges between light and structure, tradition and material experimentation, simultaneously as a new form of “washi lighting” and as a “chair.” Period : November 2025 Client : self work Design / Production : Rikuo Takata Washi : Taki Seishi Photo : Rikuo Takata
