Open stuido

Event / Echizen house

An open atelier was held based at Echizen House (SEN Atelier) in Echizen, Fukui. This initiative was conceived as an invitation for creators from outside the region who had become interested in SEN and the craft culture of Echizen through exhibitions and presentations in Tokyo to visit Fukui and engage more deeply with local making practices by visiting ateliers and workshops. During the event, Echizen House was opened as a gallery, presenting a wide variety of washi produced in the region, along with works created using these materials. Participants were also guided through places such as Udatsu Craft Museum, washi workshops, and the craft inn “SUKU,” experiencing firsthand the Echizen environment where materials, techniques, and everyday life are closely intertwined. In the evenings, Echizen House became a place for gathering, bringing together visiting creators, washi craftsmen, and local figures from Fukui. Conversations naturally emerged across disciplines and positions, creating a shared space for exchange. The open atelier served as a gentle point of connection linking city and region, makers and users, inside and outside while reaffirming the latent strength of Echizen as a place of making.Moving forward, SEN will continue to engage in activities that go beyond production and exhibition, fostering connections between regions and people through open, place-based practices.
