SUKU
SUKU is a craft inn where guests can fully experience Echizen washi. Its name carries a dual meaning: suku, referring to the act of hand making paper, and shuku, meaning a place to stay. Quietly nestled in a traditional washi-producing area, SUKU is an intimate accommodation with only three guest rooms.Passing through the noren curtain designed in the image of the “ears” of handmade paper, guests are welcomed into a reception space where layers of white washi from 16 different makers are carefully assembled. The three guest rooms are named after the raw materials of washi Kozo, Mitsumata, and Gampi each adorned with artworks inspired by its namesake.Wall coverings, shoji screens, and lanterns made generously with washi by 16 master papermakers convey the history and craftsmanship of Echizen washi through its traditional applications. At the same time, lighting, furniture, and interior elements explore new and contemporary ways of using washi, presenting expressions beyond convention. Throughout the guest rooms, visitors can experience both the tradition and the ongoing evolution of Echizen washi. Project Direction : TSUGI llc.
